Currently,most of thephysical plant of theGeneralHospital ofMexico is hori-
zontal built ina total areaof 30.9acre ofwhich16.3acrehave50 buildings,
33of these formedical careareaand17dedicated to theareas of governance,
teaching, research and general services. The GHM is highly recognized be-
cause of its mission to provide specializedmedical care to millions of Mexi-
cans, primarily to thosewhohave a low income, whoarenot registered in the
social security systemandhavenoaccess toprivatemedicine, althoughmany
of them are incorporated to the “Popular Insurance”
49percent of the patients come from theFederalDistrict, 40percent from the
State ofMexico and11 percent from other states inMexico,mainly Hidalgo,
Guerrero, Puebla andVeracruz.
In the area of education, the GHM has been considered the most relevant
and traditional teaching hospital in the development of human resources in
the area of medical health in Mexico. It is responsible for teaching under-
graduate and graduate students from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma
deMexico, theNational Polytechnic Institute,UniversidadLaSalleandUni-
versidadAnahuac.
The hospital’s research area currently performs planning, coordination,
evaluation and authorization for basic research, clinical and pharmaceuti-
cal projects. Its researchers have generated important contributions to sci-
entific investigation. As a result of these, the GHM publishes annually an
average of 94articles in indexed journals, andat the same time, the research
papers are presented during national and international conferences. With
regard to national and international scientific journals, the hospital edits
approximately 100 publications per year.
