El Hospital General deMéxico fue inaugurado hace casi 106 años; para ser precisos, el 5 de
febrero de 1905. Y aunque es uno de los hospitalesmás antiguos deMéxico también es uno
de los más vanguardistas ya que es un centro hospitalario con reconocimiento nacional y de
referencia internacional, generador demodelos de atención en las especialidadesmédicas, en
la enseñanza de lamedicina y en proyectos de investigación.

“Muchos directores del hospital, que me han antecedido, ocupan puestos importantes en el
ámbito nacional, por ejemplo, tres o cuatro fueron directores de la Facultad de Medicina de
la UNAM, o rectores de la misma casa de estudios. Varios médicos eminentes que en su
momento ocuparon cargos como jefes de servicio en el Hospital General de México salieron
de aquí para fundar los actuales institutos nacionales de salud como Cardiología, Neurología,
Nutrición, Psiquiatría, el InstitutoMexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), el Instituto de Seguridad
Social al Servicio de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), entre otros. Prácticamente no hay
un solomédico, de losmás reconocidos enMéxico, quenohayaestadoenalgúnmomentoen
el Hospital General deMéxico.”
Navarro Reynoso reconoció que en su momento esto representó un problema para el HGM,
yaque se registraronperiodos enque el hospital sequedó sinmuchagente y hubopabellones
que se quedaron prácticamente con losmédicosmás jóvenes y fueron ellos quienes tuvieron
que dar “el estirón”, aunque admitióque no siempre se logró ese objetivo.

TheGeneral Hospital ofMexicowas inaugurated almost 106 years ago, to be precise, on 5February
1905. Andalthough it is one of the oldest hospitals inMexico, it is also one of themost avant-garde as
it is anationally recognized hospital and internationally knownas a generator of attentionmodels in
variousmedical specialties, as well as inmedical educationand research projects.
Inan interviewwith the Protocolo, Dr. FranciscoNavarroReynoso, the hospital’s general director said
there are numerous contributions that theGeneralHospital ofMexico hasmade to the country:
"Many of the hospital’s directors, who have preceded me, hold important positions at the national
level, for example, three or four were directors of the Medicine Faculty at the UNAM, or Deans of
the same university. Several prominent physicians, who once held positions as heads of service at the
General Hospital ofMexico, left to fund theNational Institutes of Health such as Cardiology, Neurol-
ogy, Nutrition, Psychiatry, andTheMexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS), the Social Security
Institute for State Workers (ISSSTE), among others. Virtually most doctors, highly recognized in
Mexico, have spent some time in theGeneral Hospital ofMexico”.
Navarro Reynoso admitted that sometimes this represented a problem for the HGM, as there were
periods when the hospital ran out of many of its important physicians and the wards had to remain
in the hands of younger doctors ho had to give the needed " growth spurt, although he also recognized
that because of this situation the hospital’s goal was not always achieved.
