La llegada de los españoles al nuevomundo trajo consigo, además de
nuevas formasde trabajo, varias enfermedadesque seunierona las ya
existentes en el continente, lo que hizo necesario contar con instala-
ciones adecuadas para la atenciónde numerosos enfermos.
Durante la época de la conquista de laNueva España, el concepto de
caridad, como una forma de atención hospitalaria, fue traído por las
órdenes religiosas que llegaron al nuevo continente, y que al igual que
en Europa, continuaban con la vieja tradición de ser al mismo tiempo
hospederías, orfelinatos, asilos y sanatorios, funcionesqueconel paso
de los años se fuerondelimitando.
A finales del siglo XIX y antes de la Revolución no había un órgano
encargado de la salud para los habitantes de la República Mexicana,
únicamenteexistíael ConsejoSuperior deSalubridadquedependíade
la Secretaría de Gobernación y que actuaba como autoridad local de
Sanidad yBeneficenciaPública.

The arrival of the Spaniards to the newworld brought besides new forms of

During the time of the conquest of the New Spain, the concept of assis-
tancewas a form of charity, as ameans of offeringhospital care, andwas
provided by the religious orderswho came to thenew continent, andas in
Europe, continued with the old tradition of being hospices, orphanages,
nursing homes and clinics, which over the years started to change.
Before the Revolution, in the late XIX century, México didn’t have any
kind of health body to take care of its people, only the Superior Board of
Healthwhich depended of the InteriorMinistry, acted as an authority in
charge of local PublicHealth andWelfare Care.
A prestigious group of physicians of those years, including Dr. Adrian
Segura, thendirector of theHospital Juarez, Rafael Lavistaand JoseYves
Limantour, who were aware of the importance of modern and quality
