En ese momento se carecía de enfermeras con preparación; se
contrataron temporalmente varias enfermeras estadounidenses para
adiestrar a las mexicanas. La señora Maude Dato, enfermera de
origen alemán, trabajaba en el hospital de Acámbaro, Guanajuato, de
inmediato lacontrataroncomoprofesorade laEscuelaTeórico-Práctica
de enfermeras del hospital de San Andrés. El doctor Fernando López,
director del Hospital General, fundó la primera Escuela de Enfermería
de laRepública, en este nosocomio.
La Jefatura de Enfermeras del Hospital General estuvo a cargo de
Maude Dato; otra enfermera alemana, Gertrudis Friedrick, fungió
como subjefa; la enfermeramexicana Sara Delgado, fue la secretaria
de la Jefatura.
En el periodoposrevolucionario, la etapade reconstruccióndel país se
inició en 1917, con la promulgación de la nueva Constitución Política
de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Es aquí donde la participación
del HGM es fundamental, pues la constante y creciente aparición de
epidemias y la predominante insalubridad en el país, hicieron que sus
médicos redoblaran sus esfuerzos para continuar atendiendo a lapo-
blación y salir exitosos ante la inexistencia de políticas claras en el
aspecto de la salud.
El general Porfirio Díaz, el 1 de septiembre de 1890, pronunció esta
frase: “Laconstruccióndel hospital esunaacción imperativaparahacer
evidente en nuestromedio los progresos de la ciencia y el estado de
cultura enque se encuentra la capital”.

The hospital began operating onMonday, February 6, 1905, with 305 em-
ployees that comprised the medical and administrative staff. At that time
therewasa lackof trainednurses, so severalwere temporarilyhired from the
U.S.A., to tutor theirMexican counterparts.Mrs.MaudeM, German-born
nurse, thenworkingatahospital inAcambaro,Guanajuato,andwas imme-
diately hiredas aprofessorat theSchool of Theoretical andPracticalNurses
at the hospital in SanAndrés. Dr. Fernando Lopez, director of the General
Hospital, founded thefirst School ofNursing in this hospital inMéxico.
DatoMaude took charge as theHead of GeneralHospitalNurses staff and
anotherGermannurse,GertrudeFriedrick, servedasherdeputy chief.The
Mexicannurse, SaraDelgado, became the secretary of theHeadquarters.
In the post revolutionary period, the reconstruction of the country began
in 1917 with the enactment of the newConstitution of the UnitedMexi-
can States. That was the time whenGHM’s participationwas essential,
due to the constant and growing epidemics and unsanitary conditions
prevailing in the country. The situation called for the medical staff to
redouble their efforts to continue serving the people and be successful in
the absence of clear policies in health issues.
On September 1, 1890, General PorfirioDiaz voiced this sentence: "The
construction of the hospital is an imperative action in order to evidence
the progress of science and the state of culture existing in the capital”.
