Cuba is located in the westernmost part of the basin of the Caribbean Sea at
the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico. The Cuban archipelago is made up of more
than four thousand cays and small islands.
The island of Cuba, the largest in the Caribbean and considered among the
biggest in the world,is also known as The Key to the Gulf.
The country comprises 14 provinces and the special municipality Isla de
la Juventud (Youth´s Island). The economic, political and administrative
activities are organized in 169 municipalities, including the capitals of the
provinces that are the most important cities: Santiago de Cuba, Holguin,
Guantanamo, Bayamo, Las Tunas, Camaguey, Ciego de Avila, Sancti Spiri-
tus, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Pinar del Rio and Havana.
It is in the urban areas where about 70 percent of the population lives and
the eclectic architecture prevail, although some historic centers such as Ha-
vana and Trinidad, among others, keep the colonial environment which were
declared World Heritage Sites. But in general, there are a wide variety of
cultural expressions.
Cuba is a long and narrow island, which resembles the figure of a crocodile,
reaching 745 miles. Its widest part is 130 miles and the narrowest 19 miles.
