Durante la entrevista, Valdés Morales, quien
es considerado en Cuba como el pionero de
la plástica digital, narró que originalmente vino
a México para hacer animación por computa-
dora, que posteriormente dejó para adoptar
la creencia firme de que era posible vivir de
la pintura, lo que no podía hacer en Cuba
por su dedicación a la docencia, su otra pa-
sión. Cabe señalar que en México también ha
impartido clases y talleres en la Universidad
Iberoamericana, Casa LAMM y la Universidad
Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
A partir de 1991 el artista se dedicó de lle-
no a la pintura, participando en exposiciones
individuales y colectivas, entre las que cuen-
ta con 40 aproximadamente, tanto en Cuba
como en México y otros países.
Para el año 2000, abrió su taller de graba-
do junto al poeta Cuitláhuac Rangel, el cual
tuvo durante casi nueve años en el centro
de Coyoacán, en la ciudad de México, en el
cual han trabajado alrededor de 75 artistas,
y de los más destacados en los ámbitos na-
cional e internacional, están Raúl Anguiano,
José Luis Cuevas, José Sacal, de México, y
de Cuba Tomás Sánchez, Roberto Fabelo y
Nelson Domínguez, entre otros.

En cuanto a sus próximos proyectos, Luis
Miguel Valdés Morales organiza una expo-
sición en la Universidad Autónoma de Mo-
relos, como homenaje a los 50 años de la
ENA de Cuba, y tendrá presencia en una
exposición por el 40 aniversario del taller
de artes gráficas en el Centro de Estudios
Cubanos en Nueva York. Además de que
en su taller La Siempre Habana se ofrecen
cursos de grabado, pintura, dibujo, fabrica-
ción de cámaras fotográficas, modelado,
entre otros.
Respecto a su obra, el autor afirmó que está en
una etapa en la que no le alcanza el tiempo para
agotar un solo tema, aunque tiene la ventaja de
no estar supeditado a ninguna galería o colec-
cionista. “Soy lo más inmodesto, tengo mucho
oficio y he manejado casi todas las técnicas de
grabado y pintura, no tengo empacho en decir
que sé hacer casi cualquier cosa, por lo que
definir mi pintura me resulta un tanto difícil pues
hago lo que me da la gana. Lo que más me in-
teresa en este momento es tener el tiempo para
dedicárselo a mi pintura”, concluyó.

During the interview, Valdés Morales, who is regarded in Cuba as the pioneer of digital plastic
narrated that originally he came to Mexico to work on computer animation, that subsequently
he put aside in order to commit to the belief that it was possible to make a living out of paintig,
something he could not do in Cuba due to his dedication to teaching, his other passion. It is impor-
tant to mention that he has also taught classes and given workshops in México, at the Universidad
Iberoamericana, Casa Lamm and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Since 1991, the artist has devoted himself to painting, participating in solo and group exhibitions
- 40 or so-, both in Cuba, in Mexico and in other countries.
By the year 2000, he opened his printmaking workshop in partnership with the poet Cuitláhuac
Rangel, which lasted for almost nine years in downtown Coyoacan in Mexico City, where more
than 75 artists worked. Among the most prominent at the national and international levels are
Raul Anguiano, Jose Luis Cuevas and José Sacal from Mexico, and the Cubans Tomás Sánchez,
Roberto Fabelo and Nelson Domínguez, just to mention a few.
As for his upcoming projects, Luis Miguel Valdés Morales is organizing an exhibition at the Auto-
nomous University of Morelos, in honor of the 50th anniversary of Cuba´s ENA, and will be also
present in an exhibition for the 40th anniversary of the graphic arts workshop at the Center for Cu-
ban Studies in New York. His studio, The Havana Forever, offers courses in engraving, painting,
drawing, cameras manufacturing and modeling.
Regarding his work, the author said he is at a stage where he does not have enough time to exhaust
a single issue, although he has the advantage of not being subject to any gallery or collector. “I’m
as immodest as could be, I have much craftmanship and have handled almost all the techniques of
engraving and painting. I have no qualms in saying that I can do almost anything, so defining my
painting is somewhat difficult because I do what I do and how I please. What it is important for me
now is just to have the time to dedicate myself to painting”, he concluded.
