Además, la presencia de pictogramas en las cajetillas y en los paque-
tesdecigarrosque yaestáenmarcha, peroqueapartir del 1deenero
de 2011 tendrá vigencia plena, y el aumento en el costode tabaco.
Córdova Villalobos reconoció que sin embargo este incremento es in-
suficiente, porque lapropuesta inicial eradediezpesos, con locual se
obtendrían alrededor de 25mil millones de pesos por impuestos.
Detalló que el Estado recibía 23mil millones de pesos por impuestos
al tabaco, con siete pesos por cajetilla se podrán obtener alrededor
de 15 mil millones más; en total serían 38 mil millones. Pero todo el
sector saludgastaalrededor de45milmillones, por loque todavíahay
un déficit.
Comentó que aun con el aumento de siete pesos, el precio es bajo,
ya que mientras en México una cajetilla cuesta 30 o 35 pesos, en
Estados Unidos su valor es de 50 a 60 pesos y en Europa llega casi
a los 100 pesos.

En reconocimiento a la labor emprendida por México en materia de
tabaquismo, la Fundación Latinoamericana del Corazón entregó en
octubrepasadoun reconocimientoal secretariodeSaludpor el apoyo
a lapublicaciónde laLeyGeneral parael Control del Tabaco, así como
por lascampañasorientadasahacerque lapoblación tomeconciencia
sobre los riesgos a la salud ocasionados por el consumodel cigarro.
Al recibir el reconocimiento, el secretarioCórdovaVillalobospuntualizó
queel combatea laepidemiadel tabaquismoesunaestrategiaperma-
nentede lapresenteadministración. Y señalóqueMéxicohacentrado
sus acciones en estamateria en las siguientes estrategias fundamen-
tales: prevención, control de los productos del tabaco, promoción de
la cesación y el tratamientopara dejar de fumar.
Explicó que la Ley General para el Control de Tabaco establece que
la dependencia a su cargo promoverá la implementación de políticas
públicas tendentes a la protección de la salud de los habitantes en el
territorio nacional, de los riesgos asociados al consumo de productos
de tabaco y a la exposición al humo.
Finalmente, agradeció en nombre del Estado mexicano el recono-
cimiento, que estimula a redoblar los esfuerzos en esta lucha y a con-
tinuar el trabajo en equipo para avanzar y lograr un mundo libre de
humode tabaco.

In recognition of the work undertaken byMexico in terms of smoking, The LatinAmericanHeart
Foundation presented an award to the Secretary of Health last October, for supporting the enact-
ment of the General Law for the Control of Tobacco and the campaigns designed to make people
aware of the risks to their health caused by cigarette smoking.
Upon receiving the recognition, the Secretary Córdova Villalobos stated that the fight against the
tobacco epidemic is an ongoing policy of this administration. Andhenoted thatMexicohas focused
its actions in this matter on the following fundamental strategies: prevention, tobacco products
control, promotion of cessationand treatment to stop smoking.
He explained that theGeneral Law for theControl of Tobacco states that the office he presides, will
promote the implementationof publicpolicies designed toprotect thehealthof the inhabitants in the
country, the risks associatedwith the consumption of tobacco products and smoke exposure.
Finally, he thanked on behalf of theMexican State the recognition received, which encourages to
further efforts in this fight and continue towork together tomove forwardandachieve aworld free
of tobacco smoke.
It will contribute to inhibit consumption in the young people,
a groupwhere smoking has increased.
