El incremento de siete pesos por cajetilla de cigarros aprobado por
la Cámara de Diputados permitirá, entre otras cosas, inhibir en los
jóvenes el consumo de este producto, que es el grupo de población
objetivo, debido a que en los últimos años se ha registrado un au-
mento del tabaquismo, sobre todo en mujeres, aseguró el secretario
deSaluddeMéxico, JoséÁngel CórdovaVillalobos.
El funcionario puntualizó que esta medida, que entrará en vigor en
2011, es una de las acciones demayor trascendencia en salud públi-
ca, ya que contribuirá a evitar muertes prematuras anuales por enfer-
medades que son consecuencia del consumode tabaco.
Precisóque el aumentodel precio se suma aotras acciones que lleva
acaboMéxicoparadar cumplimientoal ConvenioMarcoparael Con-
trol del Tabaco con laOrganizaciónMundial de la Salud (OMS). Entre
ellas habló de la Ley General para el Control de Tabaco que obliga
a contar con áreas libres de humo de tabaco y la eliminación de la
publicidad de productos de este tipo.

years there has beena increased smoking, especially amongwomen, said
Mexico's health secretary, JoséÁngel CórdovaVillalobos.
He stated that this measure, which will become effective in 2011, is one
of the most transcendent public health actions because it will contribute
to prevent annual premature deaths from diseases that result from the
consumption of tobacco.
The secretary explained that the price increase is an addition to other
actions undertaken byMexico to comply with the framework of the Con-
vention for the Control of Tobacco with the World Health Organization
(WHO). Among them he spoke of the General Law for the Control of
Tobacco which calls for tobacco smoke free areas and the elimination of
advertising of such products.
