La doctoraEspinosa es la primera
mujer en dirigir este servicio dentro del
Hospital General deMéxico
Doctor Espinosa is the first woman
to head this service at the
General Hospital ofMéxico
Dr. Espinosa, who is the first woman to lead this servicewithin the hospi-
tal, saidher teamof doctors know that theymust attend toagreat number
of the poorest population of the country, those who have fewer resources,
and therefore they strive to give them an extra care: excellent medicine,
outstanding surgery anda quality treatment so that in the fewest number
of appointments they can resolve their problems.
In the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the HGM,
“we frequently take care of many patients with congenital diseases such
as cleft lipandpalate, patientswithvery serious sequels of burns, trauma-
tism inhands and face.We also perform breast reconstruction, especially
for those womenwho had cancer, because we are convinced that our pa-
tients are not fully cured until they rebuild their breasts”.
She also said they perform cosmetic surgery, but explained that this kind
of surgery is very limited, nevertheless any patient who has a deformity
or any part of their bodywithwhichhe or she is not satisfied, andas long
as the hospital has the possibility to perform a surgery to fix it, they do it
with great pleasure.
"We also do research, which is one of themajor areas of GHM. Many of
the great plastic surgery techniques and in the surgical area of medicine
have generated in this hospital, aswell asmanymajor discoveries or new
ways to treat patients”.
Dr. Espinosa explained that currently they are working in the research
of stem cells, as well as other projects related to the flaps (the body's ana-
tomical structure, consisting of skin, muscle or fat, which pass from one
body part to another in order to improve it).
Silvia Espinosa reiterated that the assistance area is a priority for
the GHM, as well as research and, of course, the training of resi-
dents. "One of our priorities is to train human resources who are
capable of working with quality, warmth, honesty and commitment
to serve others that so that themay be useful to the country. Our goal
is to form good surgeons and doctors concerned about their patients,
"she concluded.
