Fuemediante estas residencias que el doctor FernandoOrtizMonas-
teriopudoponerenprácticasuvocacióndemaestroe inicióunservicio
de cirugía plástica y reconstructiva que ha trascendido fronteras, al
que llegaronmédicosde todoelmundoparaadiestrarseen lasosadas
técnicasquirúrgicasdelmédicoque losenseñóaoperarcraneofaciales,
labios leporinos, crecimiento de tejido óseo, y reconstruir los cuerpos
deshechos y los rostros de accidentados. Todo bajo el ojo testigo del
Hospital General de México, en el cual permaneció alrededor de 30
años, para posteriormente incorporarse a las filas del hospital Manuel
GeaGonzález.
Y recuerda: “El Hospital General fue mi casa, donde hice gran parte
demi vidamédica. En cuanto a númerodepacientes, cuenta conuna
riquezaenorme, así comogentepreparadísimaenmuchoscamposde
lamedicina. Fue paramí una gran experiencia trabajar en el hospital y
una decisión difícil el irme a otro lado.”

After a couple of years of study and preparation at the GHM, Dr. Ortiz
Monasterio moved to the United States to prepare as a plastic surgeon.
Back inMexico, his homeland, he returned to the ranks of the General
Hospital of Mexico, but this time as a staff doctor. Worried about gradu-
ate teaching protocols, whichwere highly theoretical, and encouraged, by
his great courage, enthusiasmand interest in sharing new knowledge, he
began the full time post graduate programs in theHGM.
It was through these residencies that doctor Fernando Ortiz Monasterio
could implement his vocation as a teacher and started a service of re-
constructive plastic surgery that has transcended borders, and attracted
doctors around theworldwho came to be trained in these daring surgical
techniques from the physicianwho taught them how to operate craniofa-
cial, lips cleft, bone growth, and rebuild waste bodies and faces resulting
of accidents. Everything done at the General Hospital of México, that
